This is a site about one of Australia's greatest women, Caroline Chisholm.

About Caroline Chisholm

In a village called Wootton, a Catholic girl was born into the world in a little farmhouse in England. The year was 1808 and little did her parents know, Caroline Chisholm, or Caroline Jones as she would have been, she would change the lives of many women.

While she was still young, her father died. She spent more time with her mother who still found enough food to give to the less fortunate.

When she was 22 years old she married a man called Archibald Chisholm on a condition , “…that he should leave her free to do any philanthropic work she wished.” He accepted and all through their marriage, he supported her.

Growing up

Caroline Chisholm grew up in an open home to everyone. She was the youngest in the family with her wide blue eyes and red hair. Her father William Jones would often tell her stories about the people who weren’t as well off as them. People out in the world who lived in sadness and poverty.

William brought people to stay with them often. Once a one legged soldier was brought home and he enchanted Caroline with stories about distant lands. Caroline decided she wanted to travel to a distant land.
